Espanol / English Palestine’s ‘prayer for rain’: How Israel uses water as a weapon of war

Entire communities in the West Bank either have no access to water or have had their water supply reduced almost by half. This alarming development has been taking place for weeks, since Israel’s national water company, “Mekorot”, decided to cut off – or significantly reduce – its water supply to Jenin, Salfit and many villages around Nablus, among other regions.
Israel has been ‘waging a water war’ against Palestinians, according to Palestinian Authority Prime Minister, Rami Hamdallah. The irony is that the water provided by “Mekorot” is actually Palestinian water, usurped from West Bank aquifers. While Israelis, including illegal West Bank settlements, use the vast majority of it, Palestinians are sold their own water back at high prices.
By shutting down the water supply at a time that Israeli officials are planning to export essentially Palestinian water, Israel is once more utilizing water as a form of collective punishment. This is hardly new. I still remember the trepidation in my parents’ voices whenever they feared that the water supply was reaching a dangerously low level. It was almost a daily discussio

Fire hits home of witness to arson that killed Palestinian family

Fire on Sunday engulfed the home of a key witness to an arson attack by Jewish extremists that killed a Palestinian family last year, but he survived the blaze, police and residents said. The home of Ibrahim Dawabsha is located in Duma in the occupied West Bank, the same village where a July firebombing killed an 18-month-old Palestinian boy and his parents. Israeli authorities were investigating the cause of the fire at the second floor home, though residents said they believed it was started by Molotov cocktails and Palestinian officials reacted angrily to what they viewed as another extremist attack. Dawabsha and his wife were awakened overnight by thick smoke, residents said. The young couple, relatives of the family killed in the July attack, were hospitalised for smoke inhalation and were said to be in shock. "At around 1:30 am, I heard my brother and his wife call for help," said Dawabsha's brother Bashar, who lives downstairs.
"I went up to their floor and I saw the fire."

Myanmar president is sued in U.S. over alleged abuses of Rohingya Muslims

Burma PresidentWorld | Fri Oct 2, 2015
Muslim rights activists have filed a lawsuit in the United States against Myanmar President Thein Sein, accusing him and several ministers of human rights abuses against minority Rohingyas, just a few weeks before an historic general election. The complaint filed on Thursday in Manhattan federal court accused Thein Sein and top officials of planning and instigating "hate crimes and discrimination amounting to genocide." According to the plaintiffs, Muslim Rohingya are "subjected to genocide, torture, arbitrary detention, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" by officials controlled by Thein Sein and his ministers. Myanmar's government spokesman was not immediately available for comment, and did not respond to emailed requests. The civil lawsuit was filed by Burma Task Force, a group of 19 Muslim organizations, and the Rohingya man Hitay Lwin Oo.

Israel-Palestine: EU approves 'boycott' labels on Israeli settlement products

har-homa-settlementBy Gianluca Mezzofiore, November 11, 2015
The European Union has formally approved plans to label goods produced in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, in a move that is likely to increase friction with Israel. The European Commission "adopted this morning the Interpretative Notice on indication of origin of goods from the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967", said an EU official. The notice will contain guidelines for labelling products from the settlements. Why advertise with us The EU does not recognise Israel's occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, which were seized after the 1967 Six-Day War. The labelling policy would distinguish between products made inside the internationally accepted borders and those made outside. "It's an indication of origin, not a warning label," EU ambassador to Israel, Lars Faaborg-Andersen, told Reuters. However, Israeli officials say the policy is discriminatory and it recalls the boycotting of Jewish businesses in Germany under the Nazi's anti-Semitic policies.

Haredi Jews to launch ad campaign in Arabic - 'We don't ascend Temple Mount'

ShowImageBy JPOST.COM STAFF \ 11/05/2015
Last month, a Hebrew-language ultra-Orthodox newspaper caused a stir when its deputy editor published an opinion piece in Arabic urging would-be Palestinian terrorists to spare haredim since they have no intention of visiting the Islamic and Jewish holy sites on Temple Mount. Now, an austere, anti-Zionist sect of Hassidic Judaism is taking the notion a number of steps further by reportedly planning a massive public relations campaign in the West Bank, east Jerusalem, and Arab municipalities in Israel proper. According to the Kikar Hashabat news site, the organized Satmar community is raising funds from followers in both Israel and abroad for an extensive blitz on Israeli Arab and Palestinian media, the aim of which is to make clear its opposition to Zionism as well as to highlight the halachic edict banning Jews from visiting the Temple Mount.

Life of limbo for Palestinians denied IDs by Israel

290315 ash 00 11Isra Saleh el-Namey The Electronic Intifada Gaza Strip 23 November 2015

Reem Hajjaj finds it almost impossible to take an elective medical course outside the Gaza Strip. Unlike her fellow students in the Islamic University of Gaza’s medical school, she does not have a Palestinian Authority identity card. Hajjaj says that this situation has thwarted a lot of her plans. The fifth-year Palestinian medical student came from Saudi Arabia to Gaza with her family in 2006. Their visitors’ permits expired before they were able to depart. As a result, the family have been stranded in Gaza, unable to leave without the required documents. Medical faculty in the Islamic University coordinate with their peers in other countries, including the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Jordan, in order to let students take two-month elective courses abroad.

Israel Murdering Defenceless Palestinian Youths and Children

palestinian-activist-attakced-by-israeli-soldierBy Stephen Lendman, Global Research, November 02, 2015
Israel’s endless war on Palestine continues unabated – pitting one of the world’s most powerful militaries against defenseless youths, children, women and others joining their liberating struggle. State terrorism rages against courageous freedom fighters, an apartheid rogue state operating mercilessly, victims blamed for its high crimes. On Saturday, another Palestinian youth died, murdered by Israel in cold blood, alleging another stabbing attempt, fabricated like most others – during what Israeli authorities called a “violent riot,” what Palestinians call resisting tyranny. They alone were injured during the incident, no Israelis. Palestinian medics were blocked at gunpoint from aiding the victim, forced to leave. A witness told Maan News he saw multiple live rounds fired at a “young man…far from the main street.”
